A Story About Making Friends

I went to a classmate’s graduation party and I met someone who I thought would be fun to hang out with. Was I wrong!!

She invited me to her graduation party. I was very nervous because I did not know anyone because we go to different schools, but still I gave it a try because I really wanted to make new friends. Anyone who knows me knows what a huge deal it is for me to go anywhere alone, never mind a stranger’s house. The party was a BBQ/pool party. Great, now I have to worry about things popping out when they shouldn't be – if you know what I mean. Anyway, everything stayed in place and I actually did ok socializing. I was probably more quiet than usual, but I was proud of myself. A few days later, this friend wanted to hang out again. I was excited about having a friend over to my house! I told her it was her turn to come to my house..Like everyone else I try to hang out with, she said she was too nervous and asked if I would just come to her house again. She said we would hang out, her mom or dad would drop us at a local shopping center where we could grab a slice and see a movie. Wow! Sounds good to me.

I ask my mom to drive me the 20 minute car ride to another town. I stress about my outfit, my hair and what the pizza place will be like. I hate to order food and I seriously have no clue when it comes to handling money. Even though I am freaking out about how the night will go, I get ready and my totally frustrated mom brings me to her house.

Now my mom is freaking out because she hates having to let me go because she knows how stressed it makes me. When we get there, I kiss my mom good-bye and knock on the front door with a feeling that the night might actually be fun. Again, was I wrong. Did I mention she has five sisters! When I walk in the whole family was screaming at each other. I wanted to run out of the door. I mean it’s not like me and my family don’t ever scream at each other, it’s just that we usually stop when a guest walks in....awkward. My friend tells me to just ignore them and I follow her downstairs to her room. It was in her room where she shared about having taken a knife to school to, and I quote, “cut some bitch”. I am sure my face said it all. This was the first of many times I wanted to leave that night. I am guessing her sisters left because it got quiet upstairs. “Change of plans”, she tells me, and we go upstairs and her mom has “dinner” ready for us. A nasty piece of sausage….Nothing else…No bread. No peppers, no potatoes, nothing. Just sausage. A lonely sausage. Did I mention that I am a very picky eater. If I go somewhere and I don’t like what is being served I can usually fake it by pushing my food around the plate. Sometimes there’s something, one thing I like. Not happening with one sausage. Not to be rude I choked down the sausage. I hated to ask, but I needed a drink. Her mom threw a boxed fruit juice to me. Something tells me maybe her mom wasn’t expecting me. I sat there wondering, what happened to our pizza plans?

Next, her mother brought us to the movies. I am not proud to admit that time-telling is one of the hardest things for me. Apparently it is not my friend’s strongest talent either. I was totally relying on her to help me and she started freaking out. She thought that we had missed the movie. Neither one of us knew what to do so I called my mom. She had my sister go on-line to check the movie times and told me we were fine; we just had to wait like 15 minutes for the next show to start. While I was on the phone with my mom, my friend was yelling and wouldn’t listen to what I was telling her. Now I am thinking, this girl is in charge of my money – uh-oh. We finally get into the movie and it is in 3D. Great…. I already wear thick ass glasses and now they want me to wear another pair over them! Well, I don’t know if it was the sausage or the 3D special effects, but my stomach hurt. Uh-oh. So, after spending two hours of my life that I will never get back, my parents come to pick me up. My friend was trying to convince me to have them pick me up at her house, hinting around for a sleepover. Forget it. No thank you. I can only imagine what would be served for breakfast!
